“Kids: they dance before they learn there is anything that isn’t music.” ~ William Stafford
There are countless ways that your child can benefit from dancing. As one of those rare activities that is both an art form and a sport, dance has the power to improve your child’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing.
Improve Mental Health
Dancing can be a powerful way to improve the health of a child’s developing brain. A major study from Albert Einstein College of Medicine published in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that dancing has major cognitive benefits.
The study looked at various exercises, such as swimming and biking, as well as cognitive exercises, like crossword puzzles. What they discovered was that dancing had the biggest impact on overall cognitive skills (memory, sense of well-being, serotonin and stress levels).
So, if you want your child to develop a healthy and happy brain, enroll them in dance classes from an early age.
Nurture Emotional Development
“To dance is to be out of yourself, larger, more powerful, more beautiful. This is power, it is glory on earth and it is yours for the taking.” ~Agnes de Mille
Dancing helps children develop self-esteem, empathy and trust. Children gain confidence as they express their emotions through creative movement. Dance provides a safe environment for them to explore their own feelings while also learning to empathize with the emotions of others.
Dance fosters social interaction and cooperation, both with instructors, and other children. Through dance, children learn how to thrive in group dynamics. If dancing with a partner, they will also learn how to cooperate, compromise and listen. All of the above skills help children to gain a greater understanding of who they are in relation to others.
Improve Physical Health
Perhaps, the most obvious benefit of dance is its impact on physical health. Dance is one of the few forms of exercise that increases coordination, flexibility, strength and endurance all at once. Combine this with the already stated social, emotional and mental benefits, and it’s hard to come up with any reason not to get your kids dancing.
